Brits are no stranger to hopping in the car or on a train over the weekend and seeing how far we can get from London in a day. Uusually most end up in a commuter town beyond the M25.

Strictly speaking; someone could travel to the beautiful city of York from London, spend a whole day there and still make it home in time for bed.

You can catch the earliest direct service from King’s Cross at 6.15am and arrive by 8.30am.

The ancient walled city is home to the Gothic masterpiece York Minster, one of the oldest cathedrals in the UK. After walking along the city walls, visitors can climb up Clifford’s Tower as take in the awesome views.

Following a blissful day strolling around the historic streets of the city, you could make your way onto the final train at 10.25pm and arrive back in London at 1.15am.

How many can say that they’ve learnt about 3,000 years of chocolate history? Well, you could after visiting the city’s Chocolate Story Museum before perusing the winding Harry Potter-style streets a packed with independent shops and cafes.

You are spoilt for choice in York as it is home to nine Michelin Star restaurants offering a plethora of dishes for you to try.

It will not come as a suprise that York appears on Travel and Leisure’s ’17 Best Day Trips From London’ among other cities such as Paris, which can be reached in just under three hours via the Eurostar from St Pancras.
