Costa Ricans must obtain ETA for travel to the United Kingdom starting in January

QCOSTARICA — From January 8, 2025, Costa Ricans planning to travel to the United Kingdom (UK) will have to comply with the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

This measure is part of the British government’s efforts to digitize its immigration and border system, to improve security and the experience of travelers.

The application for the ETA must be made through an application available (for both iOS and Android) and the process can be completed online through this link, starting on November 27, 2024 for travel to the UK from January 8, 2025 for nationals of Costa Rica.

The introduction of the ETA is not only for citizens of Costa Rica, but also for other international travelers, such as Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Canada, and the United States, among others; while for eligible European citizens, it will be mandatory from March 5, 2025 for travel from April 2, 2025.

The ETA, which costs £10 (¢6,849.63 Colones), will be digitally linked to the traveler’s passport and will allow multiple entries to the United Kingdom for stays of up to six months over a period of two years.

This measure seeks to prevent abuses of the immigration system and ensure stricter security controls.

In addition to the ETA, the United Kingdom has also updated its visa system. Now, those who need a visa to reside, work or study in the country will receive an electronic visa, eliminating the need for physical documents and simplifying the immigration process.

Travelers who already use physical documents such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) must create an online account to access their eVisa before their BRPs expire on December 31, 2024.

The UK government is also working with airlines, shipping and rail companies to ensure a smooth transition to this new digital system.
