Make Horses Aged 6 Or Younger Your Cut-Off Point

First up is to look at the age of the Cambridgeshire Handicap runners – as ALL of the last 31 winners were aged 6 or younger.

The last horse to win aged 7+ was Rambo’s Hall in 1992, who was ridden by Dean McKeown and trained by Jeremy Glover.

At the other end of the age spectrum, since 2018 we’ve had a couple of 3 year-old winners (Wissahickon and Lord North), but with 17 of the last 22 winners (77%) aged between 4-6 this has proven to be the best age range.

In short, it’s probably just best to ignore horses aged 7 or older here.

82% Of The Last 22 Winners Carried 9st 5lbs Or Less

Being a handicap then weight carried is always worth noting too.

Last year’s winner Astro King hiked a massive 9-12 to victory – which was the biggest weight winner in modern times – well, since 1977 is as far back as we went.

But this win went against the big weight Cambridgeshire Handicap trend that tells us 18 of the last 22 winners carried 9st 5lbs or less (82%).

This stat also came in with 9 of the last 10 winners – only the, already mentioned, Astro King, winning with more.

68% Of Favourites Unplaced In The Last 22 Runnings

The record of the favourites in this competitive handicap has been fair.

This contest always attracts a max of 35 runners and so it’s no shock the record of the market leaders is going to be average at best.

However, the race has still produced four winning jollies in the last 22 (18%), which is not too shabby considering.

That said, the favourites seem to either win or bomb out as 15 of the last 22 (68) have also been unplaced.

The last winning Cambridgeshire Handicap favourite was Lord North in 2019 – the only winning market leader in the last 10 runnings. Last year’s hot favourite Greek Order (5/2) finished second to send the bookmakers home happy.

Ahead of the 2024 running, the well-backed Emmet Mullins runner This Songisforyou is heading the betting with most of the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

The Average Winning SP In The Last 22 Runnings Is 22/1

Following on from the favourites record in the race, this contest has also seen an average winning SP of 22/1 in the last 22 years.

Yes, this figure has been skewed slightly with the 100/1 winner Spanish Don in 2004, but it’s still worth knowing that horses a bit down the market can’t be overlooked.

In fact, the last four winners have returned 20/1, 25/1 and 40/1 (2), and we also had a 50/1 hero in 2017.

Very High Draws Have Dominated In The Cambridgeshire Recently

The draw has been a good trend in this big Newmarker race in recent years too.

Yes, of course, with a max of 35 there is  natually going to be more horses drawn in double-figures – backed up with 18 of the last 22 winners hailing from stalls 10+.

However, in more reent runnings the ‘really’ high draws have been favoured – with ALL of the last nine winners coming from berths 21+.

Last year’s winner Astro King won from draw 35, while since 2017 we’ve also had two drawn in 29.

While the last single-figure drawn winner was in 2015 – Third Time Lucky, who came from stall 7.

Trainer John Gosden Has The Best Record Cambridgeshire Handicap Record

Finally, if you like to stick with trainers that have a good record in races then John Gosden should be high up your list.

The Newmarket-based handler has fired in five overall winners in the Cambridgeshire – with his first coming in 1994 with the classy Halling. While his most recent winner came in 2019 with the recently retired Lord North.
