Red Devils Comfortably Advance To Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Fresh off the back of parting ways with Erik ten Hag, Manchester United welcomed Leicester to Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday evening, with interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy taking charge.

The legendary former striker’s first game in charge got off to an excellent start after Casemiro, who netted in the defeat to West Ham last weekend, scored a stunner from distance to open the scoring after 15 minutes.

Alejandro Garnacho got in on the act 13 minutes later, sweeping home United’s second at the far post after a lovely cross from Diogo Dalot from the right-hand side.

Their two-goal advantage lasted just five minutes however, as the visiting Foxes halved the deficit through Bilal El Khannouss, who smashed home his effort off the inside of the post after Altay Bayindir palmed away a cross.

Three minutes later, Bruno Fernandes reinstated the two-goal cushion with a deflected free-kick sailing beyond Danny Ward, before Casemiro doubled his tally for the evening to make it 4-1 in favour of the Red Devils.

Just before the half-time whistle, from another set-piece situation, Leicester pulled one back through Conor Coady.

There wasn’t quite as much action in the second period, but Manchester United captain Fernandes netted his second of the night a minute shy of the hour mark, ensuring his side’s advancement to the quarter-finals.

Up next for Van Nistelrooy and the Red Devils is a return to Premier League action on Sunday evening, as in-form Chelsea make the trip to Old Trafford in search of a victory to maintain the pressure on the top four.

As for Leicester, they have a crucial clash toward the bottom of the league table on Saturday afternoon. The Foxes head to Portman Road to take on fellow newly promoted side Ipswich, with five points separating the pair heading into the tie.
