More than a dozen Central Co-Op branches will shut their doors soon to make way for new businesses.
Over the next few months, 19 food stores and six funeral homes will be taken over due to ‘financial unsustainability’.
A Central Co-Op spokesperson said: ‘We will see the 19 selected Central Co-op stores transferred to their new owners, Samy Ltd and B&M Retail Ltd over the next 2-6 months, while the six affected funeral homes will be closed by early February.’
In September, it was revealed 6,945 shops closed in the first six months of 2024, amounting to an astounding 38 shops per day across the UK.
The sixteen locations being taken over by Samy Ltd – which operates Budgens, Spar, Londis & Premier shops – range from South Yorkshire to Leicestershire.
Three shops in Leicestershire, West Midlands and Norfolk will be taken over by B&M Ltd, putting brand new B&M branches in those former Central Co-Op shops.
