Assisted dying to be legalised in UK: All you need to know

MPs in the United Kingdom have proposed a bill to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. The historic draft legislation grants terminally ill adults help to end their life if they have only six months to live. MPs supported the bill by 330 to 275 with a majority of 55. The Bill marked the first Commons vote on the issue in almost a decade. To become law, the bill will have to pass more months of debate and scrutiny and be passed by both houses. The Bill was of a free vote, meaning MPs did not have to follow a party stand before choosing ayes and nos. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, his predecessor Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Rachel Reeves were in favour of the legislation. Other cabinet members like Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood were against the bill.
