As the excitement builds for Saturday’s big Scottish sprint – we look back at past Ayr Gold Cup winners – plus highlight when the last ‘back-to-back’ winner in this top 6f sprint was and also the most successful trainers to note.
The Last Ayr Gold Cup ‘Back-to-Back’ Winner Was In The 1930’s
With 25 runners heading to post most years in the Ayr Gold Cup, it goes without saying it’s one of the most competitive sprint handicaps on the horse racing calendar.
Therefore, it’s no shock that we’ve seen many different Ayr Gold Cup winners over the years, with the last ‘back-to-back’ hero coming in 1930 and 1931 with a horse called Heronslea.
Yes, in 2002 and 2004 the Dandy Nicholls-trained Funfair Wane won the race twice – but he didn’t do it consecutive seasons, having finished 25th (of 26th) in the year in between his victories.
However, the bad news is this 93 year run without a repeat winner WON’T be broken in 2024, with the 2023 Ayr Gold Cup winner – Significantly not declared as one of the final runners.
Instead the best horse racing betting sites in the UK are making last year’s runner-up Ramazan one of the big fancies, along with last week’s Portland Handicap winner American Affair.

2023 Ayr Gold Cup Winner Significantly WON’T Be Back For More
Significantly did hold an Ayr Gold Cup 2024 entry right up till the final declarations – but was pulled out by connections.
Therefore we WON’T see a horse try and end the year 100 year run without a double winner. Instead the horse will run at Newbury on Saturday in the 1:30pm.
Trainer Kevin Ryan Has Trained Three Ayr Gold Cup Winners Since 2011
Finally, if you are looking for a trainer that has had his fair share of Ayr Gold Cup winners over the years – end your search with Kevin Ryan.
The North Yorkshire-based handler has landed the Ayr Gold Cup four times since 2011 with horses called Our Jonathan (2011), Captain Ramius (2012), Brando (2016) and Bielsa (2021). And five times in total, having won it in 2007 with Advanced too.
At this stage Ryan’s best chance of adding to his past Ayr Gold Cup winners in 2024 looks to be with Sergeant Wilko, who has won his last three.
However, note that now that the final Ayr Gold Cup runners are out – the Kevin Ryan yard also has Aleezdancer and recent Pontefract scorer Room Service in the race.
Other trainers to note in the Ayr Gold Cup are David O’Meara, Richard Fahey, Andrew Balding – who have all had two winners each since 2006.
While, with last year’s winner Significantly out of the race – the 2023 winning trainer Julie Camacho doesn’t have a runner.
