BBC Radio has seen a landslide slump in listening figures over the past year. After looking at some of its biggest shows with celebrity DJs, Rajar figures state they have dropped in comparison to commercial rivals.
It has been reported that Radio 2 has seen a slump of 8.5 per cent – which is surprising as it has 14 million weekly listeners while remaining one of the most popular stations in the United Kingdom.
However, the fall for the first quarter of 2024 was just 0.4 per cent, thanks to Zoe Ball who fronts the breakfast show.
The Gogglebox regular’s programme was slightly up to 6.62 million compared to others, but well down on 7.26 million a year before. Meanwhile, Radio 1 star Greg Show also saw a drop in listeners.
His show had 3.92 million listeners, which has plummeted to 3.7 million over the first three months of the year, while competitors such as Heart FM have seen a spike in listeners.
The Heart Breakfast Show with Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston rose to 4.2 million from 3.99 million across the same period.
Their sister station Capital Breakfast, which was formally hosted by Roman Kemp for over seven years, has sky-rocketed. It is hugely popular with younger listeners and now boasts 2.55 million listeners while overall figures rose by 1.5 per cent to 6.24 million.
Although the figures include Roman’s, 31, final show where he handed over the baton to Jordan North on April 8.
Other stations are also leaving BBC bosses worried after it was reported that Virgin Radio UK across the network has 11.3 million listeners per week.
This includes the likes of the Chris Evans Breakfast Show which has reached and 1.9million listeners.
Another big hit that affected the British Broadcasting network, was when former Radio 2 legend Ken Bruce shockingly left, as he headed over to rivals over at Greatest Hits Radio.
Sadly, earlier this year the one of their former iconic broadcasters passed away but the network issued an emotional tribute to the Steve Wright with thousands tuning in.
