It’s once more into the breach for Gareth Southgate as England begin their latest bid for major tournament glory against Serbia in Euro 2024 Group C.

The Three Lions have not won a trophy since their 1966 FIFA World Cup triumph on home soil. They were within a penalty shoot-out of ending that drought in the final of Euro 2020 three years ago, only for Italy to prevail after Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka erred from 12 yards.

That followed a surprise run to the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup and more penalty pain, this time for all-time top scorer Harry Kane, saw England bow out in the quarterfinals of Qatar 2022 against eventual finalist France.

Southgate has another impressively gifted, if imbalanced, squad at his disposal but there has been significant turnover since the World Cup 18 months ago. Thirteen of the players who travelled to Qatar haven’t made the cut this time around, with previous stars Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire among the absentees.

There are also 12 major tournament debutants, some of whom are pushing for a start against Dragan Stojkovic’s side.

Serbia will pin plenty of their hopes on attacking spearhead Aleksandar Mitrovic, although Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic and AC Milan’s Luka Jovic show they have impressive depth up front. A creative midfielder department featuring Dusan Tadic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will also seek to test an untried England defence in Gelsenkirchen.

Southgate was boosted by having all 26 of his players in training on Friday. John Stones has recovered from a sickness bug and is partnered at centre-back by tournament debutant Marc Guehi. 

The experiment of fielding Trent Alexander-Arnold in central midfield steps out of the preserve of international friendlies and low-risk qualifiers. At left-back, the game comes too soon for Luke Shaw as the Manchester United left-back builds match fitness, meaning a start for Kieran Trippier.

Dusan Tadic, formerly of Ajax and Southampton has to be content with a place on the bench as Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj bolsters central midfield.

Joining Aleksandar Mitrovic in attack should be Dusan Vlahovic, who scored 16 times in 33 Serie A appearances for Juventus in 2023/24.
