THE high unemployment in the country has seen scores of desperate citizens falling prey to fraudsters, who promise them jobs in the diaspora, particularly the United Kingdom (UK) in return for fees.
In the latest scam to be exposed, two Bulawayo women have been arrested for defrauding eight jobseekers of a total of US$47 811, which they collected as facilitation fees only for the scheme to turn out to be a scam.
In a statement Thursday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said suspects operated the racket undetected for two years.
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Nokuthula Sibanda (63) and Nothando Ndlovu (48) in connection with eight cases of fraud which occurred between December 2022 and November 2024 in Bulawayo.
“The two suspects misrepresented themselves as agencies specialising in job placements in the United Kingdom and defrauded the complainants a total of US$47 811 cash,” said ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
