Former Northern Colorado women’s basketball player Delaynie Byrne signs pro contract with British Basketball League

Delaynie Byrne, a former Colorado high school player and leading scorer and rebounder on the Northern Colorado women’s basketball team last season, signed a professional contract to play in the British Basketball League.

Byrne signed with the Caledonia Gladiators of the BBL, according to the team and UNC. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 10-team British Basketball League is comprised of men’s and women’s teams and is the top level of basketball in the United Kingdom. The Gladiators are based in East Kilbride, Scotland, and are the only team from Scotland in the league.

Byrne, a 6-foot-3 forward at UNC, averaged 14.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in two seasons after transferring from UNLV. She played her freshman year at Minnesota in 2018-19.

Starting all 31 games, Byrne led the Bears in points (13.6) and rebounds (8.0) during the 2023-24 season and was named to the Big Sky Conference first team. She shot 45.6% from the field and 37.9% from 3-point range.

Byrne is from Parker and played high school basketball at Broomfield and Ralston Valley.

“Delaynie is a versatile post player who can be dominant both inside and outside the paint,” Gladiators coach Chantelle Handy said on the team website. “Her agility allows her to contribute well on both ends of the floor.”
