Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina
New Delhi: After stepping down as the Bangladesh Prime Minister on Monday, Sheikh Hasina arrived at India’s Hindan Air Base in the evening in a military helicopter. However, government sources told Times Now that Sheikh Hasina will not be staying in India and would fly to the United Kingdom.
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought asylum from the UK government. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed clarified that her mother left Bangladesh for her own safety and would not make a political comeback. Speaking to the BBC World Service, Joy said there would be no political comeback for his mother.
Hasina To Fly To London?
Sheikh Hasina flew to India’s Hindan Air Base near Delhi on Monday with her sister and was received by officers of the Indian Air Force. Within hours of landing in India, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met Hasina, however, details of the meeting are not known yet.
Initially, Hasina was expected to leave for London after a brief stopover in India. India decided to provide a safe passage through the Indian airspace to Hasina’s aircraft following a request from Dhaka, reported PTI citing sources.
But, there is uncertainty in her original plan as certain issues have come up, reported PTI. As of now, Sheikh Hasina has been moved to a safe location and is expected to meet her daughter before leaving for London.
Hasina Seeks Asylum
Sheikh Hasina has sought asylum from the UK Government following her decision to step down and her final destination is London. As per reports, Hasina’s sister travelling with her holds UK citizenship.
Asylum is a provision under which people fearing persecution in their homeland seek permission to stay in a foreign country. Once asylum is granted, the individual is safe from being deported to their home country.
The UK government had processed 112,000 claims for asylum last year, reported The Guardian.
Leaders Who Took Asylum In London
London has been the go-to destination for leaders facing threat in their homeland for politrical asylum. Earlier, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman had sought asylum from the UK government. He has been living in exile in the UK.
Apart from Rahman, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif was in London for four years after being convicted over graft charges. He recently returned to Pakistan ahead of the February general elections.
