This Saturday’s Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster has been a Group One race dominated by the Ballydoyle team in Ireland – but just how many times has trainer Aidan O’Brien won the Futurity Stakes?
Aidan O’Brien Has Trained Eleven Futurity Trophy Stakes Winners
Some of the most promising 2 year-olds in training will be heading to Doncaster racecourse this Saturday for the Group One Futurity Trophy Stakes – a race that carries a £127,576 first prize.
The market with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK is headed by the James Owen-trained Wimbledon Hawkeye, who was an impressive winner of the Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket last time out.
However, with a massive ELEVEN past wins in the Futurity Stakes, it would also be foolish to ignore any runners that trainer Aidan O’Brien sends over from this Ballydoyle base.
The race, which slightly older horse racing lovers will remember as the Racing Post Trophy, has also been a fair guide to the following season’s Classics – the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby in particular.
With the 2019 winner Kameko winning the Futurity Trophy and then the 2000 Guineas the following year in 2020.
While the 2022 winner Auguste Rodin, who was also trained by Aidan O’Brien, went onto land the Epsom Derby in his 3 year-old season.
That win for Auguste Rodin was O’Brien’s 13th in total and most recent heading into the 2024 renewal, with his first coming way back in 1997 with Saratoga Springs.
Between that winner and 2022, Aidan O’Brien has had other big names like Saxon Warrior, Camelot, St Nicholas Abbey and High Chaparral win the Futurity Stakes.

Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery Are The Winning-Most Jockeys In The Futurity Stakes
In addition to Aidan O’Brien’s big haul of 11 Futurity Stakes winners, the winning-most jockeys in the race remain Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery – who are, of course, sadly no longer with us.
The pair racked up five wins each during their riding days – with horses like Reference Point (Eddery) and Ribocco (Piggott) doing the business.
In more recent year’s Ryan Moore has fired in three winners since 2017 – Saxon Warrior, Luxembourg and Auguste Rodin – so is closing in on the Piggott/Eddery tally.
While Andrea Atzeni, who is riding in Hong Kong at the moment, rode four winners between 2013 and 2016.
