Ireland boss issues Caoimhin Kelleher transfer message ahead of Liverpool decision | Sporting News United Kingdom

Liverpool goal keeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set make a major call on his club future in 2025.

The Republic of Ireland international openly confirmed his intention to leave Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as he wanted a No.1 spot.

Despite rumoured interest from a string of Premier League teams, Liverpool opted against a sale, due to Kelleher’s unique value as a deputy stopper.

The 26-year-old has stepped in admirably to cover Alisson’s injury absence this season with clean sheets against Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

However, Arne Slot consistently maintained his position of Alisson being first-choice, and the Brazilian has now returned to the starting XI.

Despite Kelleher’s strong bond with the Reds fanbase – and his superb performances at Anfield – his future looks certain to lie elsewhere with a deal already in place for the arrival of Valencia star Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer.

Kelleher national team latest

The sense of Kelleher needing to leave to reignite his career has been echoed by his national team boss with Heimir Hallgrimsson indicating he is in favour of a move away from Merseyside.

“We would like our players to play. I will answer this question the same way whoever it is; as a national team coach, you would always like to see your players playing,” as per the Irish Mirror.

“Whether it’s Evan [Ferguson] or someone else. It’s our preference. We would like our players to play. The same with Caoimhin.

“We don’t know if he’s going to play games for Liverpool even though he’s done brilliantly.”

Liverpool are unlikely to sanction a January exit for Kelleher, with Slot sticking with his pragmatic line on the issue, and the Reds fighting across four fronts in 2025 – meaning he will be utilised in the months ahead.
