Ireland international Seán Flood has joined British basketball champions London Lions as the English club seek a fresh start after it briefly went into administration last month.

The three-time British champions last weekend confirmed the 27-year-old – who captained his country during February’s World Cup qualifying window – will join them this season.

“I’m extremely excited to get over there and meet everybody now soon and get started on this new journey together,” Flood said in a club Instagram video.

The Dubliner, who helped Ireland to a European Small Nations title in 2021, joins the side having played last season in the Netherlands after stints with Austrian and Cypriot clubs.

The London Lions were taken over last month by tech hub Tesonet just two weeks after the club went into administration.

The buyout followed months of uncertainty around the club’s financial future under previous owners 777 Partners – the US investment company which also failed to complete a takeover of Everton FC.

A number of players and staff had previously said they were likely to leave the London Lions over their concerns for the franchise’s future before last month’s Tesonet deal was announced.

Flood joins the team after their successful title defence and they now will compete in the newly formed Super League Basketball division, which replaces the British Basketball League (BBL).
