Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts are in place across the UK on Tuesday, as the Met Office issued another two days of warnings for snow and ice in coastal regions.

The severe winter weather had an adverse impact on the transport network on Tuesday, with a number of roads, train lines and airports closed because of snow or flooding.

A critical incident was declared by East Midlands Ambulance for the first time ever, with flooding partly responsible for the “level of escalation”.

Authorities in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland declared major incidents on Monday evening, with warnings that more flooding could occur on Tuesday.

A number of yellow weather warnings issued for snow and ice are in place for Tuesday and Wednesday – with the possibility of power cuts and mobile phone coverage being affected in the next 48 hours.

As of 8.30am on Tuesday, there were about 190 flood warnings in place across England, according to the Environment Agency, meaning flooding is expected in those areas.

There was also one severe flood warning, affecting the River Soar at caravan parks near Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire, meaning there is a danger to life.

In addition, there were more than 290 flood alerts, meaning that flooding is possible. Most of the worst flooding is in the Midlands, the north of England and the south coast.

According to National Resources Wales, there are 15 flood alerts in place.

There are currently no flood alerts in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

A yellow snow and ice warning is in place across most of south-west England and Wales, coastal parts of North Wales and Merseyside and parts of north west England and the West Midlands, until 10am on Tuesday.

The same warning is in place for western and northern parts of Scotland until midday, and in Northern Ireland until 11am.

Manchester Airport reopened its two runways on Tuesday after closing them for the third consecutive day because of snow.

The airport announced at 2am the runways were closed “due to heavy snow”, they were reopened by 5am.

At least 23 flights due to arrive between 4.40pm on Monday and 1am on Tuesday were diverted to other airports, affecting around 4,000 passengers.

Bristol airport said at 8am that flights have resumed after they were suspended earlier on Tuesday because of “the ongoing weather conditions”.

One Ryanair flight from Kaunas in Lithuania to Bristol was diverted to Stansted, Essex during the suspension.

National Highways said three stretches of A-roads across England are closed.

The A1 in Lincolnshire is closed in both directions between the B6326 near Newark-on-Trent and the B1174 near Grantham because of “extensive flooding”.

The A628 Woodhead Pass in South Yorkshire/Derbyshire is shut in both directions between the A616 for Flouch and the A57 for Hollingworth because of snow.

The A34 in Berkshire is closed southbound from the A339 for Donnington and the A4 for Newbury to allow emergency barrier repairs. It is not known if this is weather-related.

On the trains, flooding means all rail lines are closed between Peterborough and Leicester, affecting CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway services.

Northern said a fault with the signalling system means no trains can run between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport.

Great Western Railway said flooding has closed the line between Liskeard and Looe in Cornwall.

On Monday, firefighters in Leicestershire rescued 59 people, while the body of a man was recovered from an area of flooding in North Yorkshire.

Police said the man has been formally identified, but efforts to trace his next of kin were ongoing, adding that there are currently no suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery.

At a primary school in Edenham, Lincolnshire, 50 pupils were rescued after the road outside their school was flooded, leaving them trapped in the building.

Hundreds of schools were closed across the country, in areas including Lancashire, Yorkshire and north-east Scotland.
