The UK’s worst areas for uninsured driving have been revealed by a new study.

This year alone, 115,000 uninsured drivers have had their vehicles seized, with injuries caused by uninsured and hit-and-run drivers costing the British economy nearly £2.4 billion a year in emergency services.

What’s worse, is that every 20 minutes in Britain, someone is hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver, and each day at least one person suffers life-changing injuries from such a crash.

But now, a new study by Motor Insurers’ Bureau has revealed the spots in the United Kingdom where uninsured drivers are most prolific.

Shockingly, eight of the top 15 spots are occupied by areas in Birmingham, with the country’s most prolific places for uninsured drivers being the city’s B11 and B21 postcodes.

East London’s DA17 district in Bexley occupies the third spot. Interestingly though, the MIB said 30 claims against uninsured drivers in Croydon, south London, were made – the highest in any postal district in the UK. However, due to how densely populated the area is, it only ranked 176th in the list.

Some of the other significantly effected areas include the WV2 district in Wolverhampton, NE29 in North Tyneside and HP12 in Buckinghamshire.

One motorist, Ian Lee, suffered serious injuries after being struck by a stolen lorry in a hit-and-run in 2021.

Mr Lee had been travelling back to his home when the truck, which had cloned number plates, struck his car in an ‘almighty crash’ in Wakefield, West Yorkshire – and the driver fled on foot afterwards.

Mr Lee told Sky News: ‘I’d just set off from the traffic lights and, all of a sudden, there was an almighty crash.

‘I was shunted over to the other side of the road and it was all a bit of a blur. I got out to have a look and saw this lorry on my car.’

Mr Lee suffered an injury to his shoulder in the crash, and still suffers pain to this day.

He said: ‘When I look back, actually I was really, really lucky to get out of that one.’

Uninsured drivers are currently punished with a £300 fixed penalty and six to points to their license if caught

Police have the power to seize uninured vehicles if they are discovered.

Those who end up in court could be banned from driving and handed an unlimited fine.
