The William Haggas-trained Montassib will now head to British Champions Day for a tilt at the Champions Sprint Stakes after winning first Group 1 at Haydock on Saturday. See more about the Montassib next race below.
Montassib Comes From The Back To Strike In G1 Sprint Cup At Haydock
It was a 1-3 for top trainer William Haggas in Haydock’s feature Group 1 Sprint Cup on Saturday afternoon after MONTASSIB took home the big prize.
Cieren Fallon gave Montassib a peach of a ride making it two wins from his last two starts. He was last saw winning the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle back in June. Whilst it was the horse’s first G1 success, it was a third G1 win for Fallon.
The gutsy six-year-old came from the back in vintage fashion to land his first G1 honour, with stablemate Unequal Love finishing behind in third.
Unequal Love has turned into a useful filly for the Haggas team, and continues to improve run-by-run. However, she couldn’t get past her older inmate Montassib who defied the odds to win the big sprint at 25/1.
The eventual winner wasn’t fancied too much going into the race, with many thinking the ground may have been too quick for him. However, the fast surface didn’t stop Haggas’ charge.
His Newmarket-based trainer even said after the race that he thought the ground would have been against him: “I thought Unequal Love might run well as she’s such a genuine filly, but I thought the ground would be too quick for Montassib. I also thought all the action would be on the stands rail.”
This just goes to show that horse racing can be a funny old game.
