The Dutch Keep Getting Better
They finished third in their group, which, at the time, was seen as a failure. However, by finishing in that place, they were able to avoid playing against real heavyweights early on in the knockouts. In fact, in the round of 16, they played against Romania, while in the quarterfinal, their opponent was Turkey.
Now, they’re facing their toughest rival so far. The good news for Koeman and his men is that they’ve shown some signs of improvement since the start of the knockout phase. In the game against Romania, their defense looked solid, keeping the opposition from scoring. These guys did great offensively in that game, as well, scoring three goals.
It was a bit different against the Turks, who had a 1:0 lead at one point, but when the Dutch exploded, they turned into real world-beaters. They eventually won the game 2:1, but it could’ve been even more.
England Seem to Be Aiming for Penalties
England got to the semis after beating Switzerland on penalties. It was the third time that they won a penalty shootout in the Gareth Southgate era. Before that, they did it only three times in more than 50 years.
Another thing suggesting that Southgate’s strategy is to go for the penalties is that his men looked really good during the shootout. They scored each of their five penalties, practically giving no chance to the opposition keeper to save it.
Our prediction is that they’re gonna go for another shootout in Wednesday’s game. It’s not just because they’ve been obviously working hard to polish their penalty-shooting skills; it’s also because beating the Dutch looks like a very hard task.
This goes especially given that England haven’t been playing great soccer since coming to Germany. They finished the group stage with one win and two draws, then went on to beat Slovakia in extra time and the Swiss on penalties.

Our prediction is that Wednesday’s game is going to end in a draw after 90 minutes. We suspect not much will change in the extra time, after which, we’ll see a penalty shootout. And that’s where Southgate’s men should have the edge.
