England has been on life support for most of the knockout stages of the European Championship. Against Slovenia, it trailed for roughly 70 minutes and looked destined for a Round of 16 exit before Jude Bellingham threw his country a lifeline via a bicycle kick goal deep into stoppage time.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal against Switzerland, the Three Lions fell behind 75 minutes in, got a Bukayo Saka equalizer a few minutes later before panic truly set in, and ultimately survived on penalty kicks. They now play the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday (3 p.m. ET, FOX), cast in a favorite’s role again, according to betting odds on top sportsbook sites.
On paper, the Dutch will be England’s toughest opponent to date in Euro 2024, ranked seventh in the FIFA rankings. England is fifth. The teams most recently played in the semifinals of the UEFA Nations League in 2019 with the Netherlands winning 3-1 in extra time. England last won 1-0 in an Amsterdam-based friendly in ‘18. Over 22 all-time meetings, L’Orange has won seven, lost six and there have been nine draws.

England betting news and analysis
Saka was employed at left wingback by coach Gareth Southgate against the Swiss, while Ezri Konsa started for suspended defender Marc Guehi. Between Bellingham, Phil Foden and Kobbie Mainoo, there’s plenty of skill and creativity in midfield hoping to set striker Harry Kane up in front of goal, but this group has rarely pushed forward and taken advantage of their talent.
Guehi had a great run through the first four matches, so Southgate has a decision to make along his backline between him and Konsa. Veteran Kieran Trippier started ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right wingback, but that could change here.
Netherlands betting news and analysis
The Dutch have had a rollercoaster ride of a Euros, too, losing to Austria 3-2 to close out Group D play after playing France to a goalless draw. They rallied past Poland 2-1 in their opener and stared down a second-half deficit against Turkey in the quarterfinals, also posting a 2-1 win. Its most impressive effort came in a 3-0 Round of 16 rout of Romania in which sub Donyell Malen scored twice in a 10-minute stretch to put the match away.
Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo has a team-high three goals. Head coach Ronald Koeman is likely to stay with Memphis Depay as Gakpo’s strike partner, but has options in Malen and Wout Weghorst.
The Dutch midfield has been solid despite the absence of Frenkie de Jong, who is missing the tourney due to a nasty ankle injury, and Teun Koopmeiners, due to a muscle injury. Will this be when their absences catch up to the Netherlands?

Kane is deemed the most likely goal scorer (), while Depay () is the favorite to score for the Dutch. Given the role he’s played as a playmaker, Depay to score or assist at +200 could work out to double your investment. Other goal-scoring options to consider include the Netherlands’ Malen (), Steven Bergwijn () and Xavi Simons (), as well as England’s Foden (), Saka () and Bellingham ().
Netherlands vs. England prediction: Bellingham to score or assist and the English to advance in Euro 2024
The Dutch are in their first Euro semi in 20 years, while England were runners-up three years ago and have routinely gone deep into tournaments lately. Between the Netherlands being so young in midfield, the Three Lions having already stared down elimination to create a “team of destiny” feel and Bellingham having a magical 2024 with Real Madrid and his run with the National Team, expect him to make the difference as England reaches a second straight European Championship final.
