New fee for Canadian travellers to United Kingdom starts in 2025 | insauga

Canadians planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2025 will need to pay a new fee and get authorization to enter the country in advance.

Starting Jan. 8, 2025, all Canadian and U.S. citizens will need an Electronic Travel Authorization to travel to or through the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom states on their website.

Canadians planning a trip for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study will need the new authorization.

Travellers with a visa do not need Electronic Travel Authorization.

Canadians need to apply online and pay the 10-pound fee in advance of travel.

The same requirement comes into effect for European Union citizens on April 2, 2025.

Travellers will usually get a decision on the Electronic Travel Authorization within three working days, the United Kingdom government notes on its website.

The government suggests people apply for the authorization before booking a trip.

The authorization lasts for two years and people can travel to the U.K. as many times as they want during that time. But if you get a new passport, you will need a new Electronic Travel Authorization.

The UK government hasn’t said why it is adding the fee but experts suggest it is a security measure given the increase in terrorist attacks.

For more information and to apply, see the U.K. website here.
