New requirement to travel to the United Kingdom in 2025 unveiled

If you’re looking to go across the pond in 2025 and beyond, there’s one new thing to add to your pre-travel checklist: an “electronic travel authorization.”

The ETA is a new visa waiver required to travel to the United Kingdom for any trips that last six months or less for business or pleasure starting Jan. 8, 2025.

This is not unlike the United States’ ESTA program, which requires incoming travelers to pay for an “authorization to travel, with security clearance done in advance,” CNN reported.

Residents of 48 countries, including the United States, will have to apply and pay the £10 fee for the ETA. £10, for those who don’t have the conversion handy, is a little less than $12.50 today, CNN said.

There are two ways to apply for the ETA: on the official government website or via the certified app. CNN said that the app, be it for Apple or Android users, “boast of being quicker, with 10-minute processing times.”

Nevertheless, the final say on your ETA application should “be given within three days, though the government warns it could take longer.”

Here’s what you need to apply for the ETA, according to the United Kingdom’s official website:

  • A passport, since you’ll be inputting a photo of your passport into the application.
  • A photo of yourself to input into the application.
  • A form of payment, such as a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

You’ll answer some questions about your travels, as well.

Once you get the thumbs up on your ETA, it’s good for any travel to the United Kingdom for two years, so long as your passport does not expire within that time. If it does, you’ll have to reapply.

Another thing to keep in mind: ETAs are needed for every person traveling. There isn’t a family plan, so, yes, your toddlers or teenagers or seniors will need their own ETA.

The ETA is only valid for the countries within the United Kingdom: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
