Andrew heads to Champions Day at Ascot for his three recommended bets/trades on Saturday, October 19th…

ASCOT SPs

Last year, a soft-ground Champions Day produced winners at 9-1, 40-1, 22-1, 5-1, 3-1f and 25-1 and a buy of STARTING PRICES could again pay dividends. Soft ground also made life difficult for favourites in 2020, with the winners returning 11-1, 16-1, 4-1f, 5-1, 9-1 and 15-2. If Ascot receives the north end of the forecast rain on Saturday morning, then we could be looking at heavy going come post time and, with plenty of the fancied runners potentially over the top after long seasons, a buy of STARTING PRICES with Spreadex looks warranted.

Recommendation: Buy STARTING PRICES at Ascot

ASCOT 1.55

JAMES’S DELIGHT appreciates good to soft or softer going and a 6f trip, taking his record under these conditions to 11112 (4-5) when going down by a neck into second at Deauville last time where the ground was quicker than the official ‘very soft’ verdict. On recent evidence, he looks well drawn in stall 7 for the Champions Sprint and the booking of Ryan Moore is the icing on the cake. Moore is 13 from 40 when riding for Cox in Britain/Ireland for a profit of £29.79 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.82, A/E = 1.66), including a 6-1 won on James’s Delight earlier this year. Buy in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price.

Recommendation: Back JAMES’S DELIGHT in Ascot 1.55

ASCOT 4.35

Nine of the last ten winners of the Balmoral Handicap were drawn in stall 10 or lower (once non-runners were taken into account) and a very recent outing has also been crucial with nine of the winners having raced in the past 27 days. Backing all the runners who qualified on both angles would have found nine winners from 64 bets in the past ten years for a profit of £111.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Last year’s six qualifiers included the 25-1 winner, 40-1 runner-up and 10-1 fourth. There are five qualifiers this time around – POPMASTER, CARRYTHEONE, BOPEDRO, STAR OF ORION and MEXICALI ROSE and the safest call for Spreadex buyers (or each-way punters) could be BOPEDRO. David O’Meara’s eight-year-old finished second best of those drawn high when tenth of 31 in the Cambridgeshire on his penultimate start and placed at 28-1 over an inadequate 7f here last time. Buy in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price, each-way.

Recommendation: Back BOPEDRO in Ascot 4.35
