As horse racing punters hunt out the Ryan Moore rides at Ascot on Champions Day this weekend – there is a small word of caution, as one of the best jockeys in the world hasn’t had the best of times at the meeting in recent years.
Ryan Moore Has Ridden Just One Champions Day Ascot Winner Since 2018
It’s quite a remarkable horse racing stat really, considering the firepower that top jockey Ryan Moore has at his disposal from the Aidan O’Brien yard.
However, it’s not only Moore that’s had a barren spell at Champions Day, as O’Brien hasn’t had a winner at the fixture since 2019 either.
The bad news for Ryan Moore was that this Aidan O’Brien winner in 2019 (Magical) was in fact ridden by Donnacha O’Brien – with Moore missing the whole 2019 meeting due riding in Australia that week – partnering Ten Sovereigns in one of the richest races in the world – The Everest.
Having drawn a blank in 2023, with big names Kyprios and Paddington both turned over, and also no winners in 2022, 2021 and 2020 – you have to trawl back to 2018 to find the last of the Ryan Moore rides at Champions Day at Ascot to have won.
The horse in question was Magical again – who prior to winning the 2019 Champion Stakes – landed the 2018 British Champions Filles & Mares Stakes under Ryan Moore (watch below).
All this means Ryan Moore will head into Champions Day 2024 on a run of 24 rides WITHOUT a win.
While it’s also interesting that a massive 19 of his last 24 rides (79%) at this fixture were also UNPLACED.
However, Moore will have a great chance of ending this run with top stayer Kyprios, who is a warm order with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK, in the opener – the Long Distance Cup.
