UK Elections 2024: How Does The Process Work?

The United Kingdom is preparing for the upcoming general election, slated to take place on July 4, 2024. Political parties and voters alike are gearing up for an event that will, no doubt, shape the nation’s political trajectory. Here’s a breakdown of the electoral process:

1. Dissolution of Parliament:

Parliament was dissolved on May 30 2024- kicking off the process. It marked the end of the current parliamentary term. All Members of Parliament (MPs) cease to hold their seats, and Parliament ceases to function until after the election.

2. Campaigning Period:

Following dissolution, a campaigning period commences. During this time, political parties and their leaders rally to garner public support. This crucial phase spans about six weeks leading up to polling day. Campaigning tactics involve rallies, debates, door-to-door canvassing, and even media appearances aimed at persuading voters.

3. Electoral Registration and Voting:

In order to participate in the election, eligible citizens must ensure they are registered to vote. This needs to be done by June 18, 2024. Voters can cast their ballots in person at polling stations between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on July 4. They will need to carry a photographic ID for the first time in a general election.

4. Counting and Results:

Votes are counted right after polling stations close. An exit poll samples voters at selected constituencies. It offers an early indication of the likely outcome. Formal counting then commences. Results are expected to come out in the early hours of the following day. Simply put, the candidate with the majority of votes in each constituency becomes its MP.

5. Formation of Government:

In order to become the Prime Minister, the leader of the party will need to secure a majority of at least 326 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons. The leader, now Prime Minister, is invited by the monarch to form a government. In case of a hung Parliament- where no party secures a majority- coalition-building or minority governments may come into play. This necessitates negotiations between parties.

6. Post-Election Formalities:

Following the election, Parliament reconvenes on July 9, 2024 for the swearing-in rituals. The newly elected MPs take their oaths of office. Right off the bat is the election of the Speaker of the House of Commons. Subsequently, the State Opening of Parliament takes place on July 17, 2024. On this day, the monarch delivers the Speech from the Throne. The King will outline the government’s legislative agenda for the new session.

Issues such as the economy, healthcare, immigration, and climate change are expected to stir up contentious debate. The Conservatives led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Labour Party led by Keir Starmer are in the running.
