UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Replacing the Visa Waiver – London Post

The UK visa waiver program is being replaced by the UK Electronic Travel Authorization “ETA” for saudis and other gcc countries, the ETA is a new electronic travel system introduced by the United Kingdom in November 2023. This system allows visitors from specific countries to apply for advance authorization to travel to the UK for short stays. The goal of the ETA is to simplify the travel process, offering a more accessible application method with fewer requirements than a traditional visa.

In this guide, we will provide essential information for travelers from certain nationalities regarding their eligibility and application for the UK ETA.

What Is a Non-Visa National?

A non-visa national is an individual who can enter the UK as a visitor for up to six months without needing to apply for a visit visa in advance. As of October 2023, Qatari nationals are required to apply for a UK ETA. Starting February 2024, nationals from the following countries will also need to obtain an ETA:

  • Bahrain
  • Qatari
  • Oman
  • Kuwait
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

The UK Visa Waiver vs. the UK ETA

Previously, visitors from certain countries could enter the UK under a visa waiver, allowing them to bypass a formal visa application. This process has now been replaced by the UK ETA. While both systems aimed to facilitate easier travel, the ETA provides a more structured and secure approach, ensuring that travelers have prior authorization before arriving in the UK.

The ETA is designed to be a quicker, cheaper, and more straightforward alternative to the traditional visa application. It can be processed online within 48 hours to three months before travel.

Recent Changes to the UK ETA

Recent updates to the UK ETA include:

  1. Expanded Eligibility: The list of countries required to obtain an ETA has been broadened. Initially, it was limited to a few nationalities, but more countries were included as of February 2024, and more than 80 countries will be included as of 2025.
  2. Application Process Improvements: The application process has been streamlined, making it even easier for travelers to complete their ETA applications online.
  3. Enhanced Security Measures: To strengthen border security, the UK has implemented additional verification steps during the application process. This ensures that all applicants meet entry requirements before their travel.
  4. Longer Validity Period: The ETA now allows for a validity period of up to two years, facilitating multiple entries during that timeframe, provided the traveler’s passport remains valid.

What You Can Do With an ETA

An ETA allows you to visit the UK for various purposes, including:

  • Tourism, business, or short-term study for up to six months
  • Up to three months under the creative worker visa concession
  • Attending a permitted paid engagement (PPA)
  • Transiting through the UK without passing through border control

If you plan to visit the UK for reasons outside these categories, you may need to apply for a different type of visa.

Exemptions From the ETA Requirement

Certain individuals are exempt from needing an ETA, including:

  • Visa Applicants: Those applying for a standard visa to enter the UK are not required to apply for an ETA.
  • Holders of Alternative Permissions: Individuals with valid visas or residency permits, such as those under the EU Settlement Scheme, do not need an ETA.
  • British or Irish Passport Holders: Citizens of Ireland and the UK are exempt from the ETA requirement.
  • Residents of Ireland: Individuals who can enter the UK without a visa are also exempt.

UK ETA Requirements

To apply for a UK ETA, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Payment Method: A valid credit or debit card is required to pay the ETA application fee. Alternative payment methods, such as e-wallets, may also be accepted.
  2. Digital Photos: A recent passport-sized photo must be uploaded or taken directly during the application. The photo should adhere to standard passport guidelines.
  3. Valid Passport: You must possess a passport from an eligible country, valid for at least two years, as the ETA expires when the passport does.
  4. Email Address: A valid email address is required for communication regarding your application status.

UK ETA Fees

The application fee for the UK ETA is set at $10 per applicant, regardless of nationality or age. This standard fee ensures consistency across all applications.

Final Thoughts

ETA applications are generally processed within a few days, although some may be processed instantly while others take longer, especially during peak travel seasons. It is advisable to apply for your ETA well in advance of your intended travel dates to allow sufficient processing time.

While the ETA permits you to travel to the UK, remember that you will still need permission to enter upon arrival.
