UK launches Chevening ASEAN Scholarship to empower future leaders

This year sees the launch of the United Kingdom’s Chevening ASEAN Scholarship programme. This scheme, in addition to the country specific Chevening programmes, also offers fully funded opportunities for exceptional individuals to pursue a Master’s degree at one of the UK’s top universities, as well as bespoke additional opportunities. All applicants from the region will automatically be considered for the ASEAN Scholarship unless they choose to opt out.

This new scholarship opportunity underscores the UK’s commitment to fostering educational exchanges and strengthening ties with ASEAN Member States.

UK Ambassador to ASEAN, Sarah Tiffin, said:

I am delighted that the UK is launching these new Chevening ASEAN Scholarships. This initiative not only offers a unique opportunity for talented individuals to pursue a higher education in the UK, but also provides ASEAN Chevening scholars with a bespoke additional programme, priority invitations to key events, and access to a new ASEAN Chevening Scholars alumni network. It is a privilege to be empowering these ASEAN scholars through this great educational opportunity, and invaluable experiences.

Secretary General of ASEAN, Dr. Kim Kao Hourn, said:

I believe this is a remarkable milestone in our collective commitment to nurturing the future leaders of the region. This scholarship is more than just an educational opportunity; it is a powerful catalyst for regional integration and ASEAN Community-building efforts. As we face an increasingly interconnected world, this program serves as a vital bridge, enabling our scholars to exchange ideas, build networks, foster cultural understanding and cultivate innovative solutions to the challenges and needs of our time.

In addition to the standard Chevening offerings, Chevening ASEAN Scholars will benefit from an exclusive ASEAN programme, which includes:

  • A welcome event at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO);

  • Priority invitations to South East Asia Policy Network and ASEAN events hosted by the FCDO;

  • Engagements at the FCDO, Houses of Parliament, and with private sector leaders, academics, and think tanks; and

  •  A post-graduation Chevening ASEAN Conference

This scholarship is one of many new initiatives by the UK Mission to ASEAN, highlighting the deepening engagement between the UK and Southeast Asia.
