The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers meet in Super Bowl 58 on Sunday in the most highly-anticipated and deciding match of the 2023 NFL season. A 3:30 p.m. kick-off at Allegiant Stadium; that translates to an 11:30 p.m. start time for UK viewers!
The game is a rematch of Super Bowl 54 in early 2020, when the Chiefs beat the 49ers 31-20, in Miami, and a fourth Super Bowl in just five seasons for the Chiefs, who defeated Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in their AFC Championship Game last week. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes could etch his name further into NFL history with a third Super Bowl title, with coach Andy Reid also on the brink of three Lombardi trophies.
Mahomes is currently tied with Terry Bradshaw, Peyton Manning and John Elway for the third most postseason wins for any quarterback in NFL history with 14, and would be just one behind Joe Montana’s 16 with victory in Vegas on Sunday night.
Chiefs tight-end Travis Kelce completed 11 catches on 11 targets for 116 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens, with his 156 overall a new record for career catches in NFL postseason history. Kansas City have really aimed up in defence too during the playoffs, conceding just 13.7 points per game in their three successive victories over Miami, Buffalo and Baltimore.
The 49ers came back from a whopping 17 points down to defeat Detroit Lions 34-31 in their NFC Championship Game last weekend, after finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record. Coach Kyle Shanahan is looking for his first Super Bowl title at the second attempt in five years, after the Californian franchise were defeated by the Chiefs back in 2020.
Quarterback Brock Purdy has been solid throughout the postseason and will take to the Super Bowl field for the first time. Running back Christian McCaffrey is only the third player in NFL history to register 50 or more yards from scrimmage, and one or more touchdowns in each of his first six career playoff games.
So, it comes down to two evenly-matched sides playing for the biggest prize of all, with plenty of recent history between the Chiefs and 49ers. Can all-conquering Kansas retain the title and condemn San Francisco to a second Super Bowl defeat in five seasons, or is it the 49ers’ time to exact revenge for 2020 and win their first title since 1994?
