Manchester United’s stunning victory over Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final not only added a spicy bit of history to their storied rivalry, but it also booked yet another chapter of the derby in the near future.
Set once again to set the stage for the coming season, the Community Shield is thought of as the curtain-raiser for each new campaign, pitting the reigning Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners in a showcase match with a trophy on the line (if the same time won the league and FA Cup, they face the team that came second in the top flight).
The Community Shield is officially considered a trophy, but it is generally not recognised as a major piece of silverware in English football by most standards. Still, when there’s a tangible prize on the line and a celebration to go along with it, players will be motivated to put their best foot forward.
Adding to the motivating factors this season will be the presence of a derby as two bitter and hated rivals will meet in the coming matchup.

Which teams play in the Community Shield match?
The Community Shield is a one-off game between the reigning Premier League champions and FA Cup holders. For 2024, that will be Manchester City vs. Manchester United.
Thanks to United’s 2-1 win, the two sides will again meet with a trophy on the line as they contest the 2024 Community Shield to raise the curtain on the coming season.
Had Man City won the FA Cup to complete back-to-back domestic doubles, it would have seen them face Premier League runners-up Arsenal in the Community Shield. Instead, Man United will have another crack at their rivals to open the season.
The two Manchester clubs have only met twice in the Community Shield, with the Red Devils winning both previous meetings. The first came way back in 1956 when United won 1-0 at Maine Road on a 75th-minute winner from longtime forward Dennis Viollet. They repeated that result over half a century later as they won 3-2 over City in the 2011 Community Shield, with Nani scoring a dramatic 94th-minute goal to seal the victory.
Who won the last Community Shield?
Arsenal won the 2023 Community Shield after defeating Manchester City on penalties.
Leandro Trossard scored a 111th-minute equaliser after Cole Palmer, now of Chelsea, had put City ahead. The Gunners won 4-1 in the penalty shootout.
